Weekly Update 03/05/10
~ Friday March 5, 2010

What are you willing to do to stand up to an oppressor? Would you stand up to them if they had guns? Guns pointed at you? On this day back in 1770, the Boston Massacre took place in front of the State House when a crowd of civilians was fired upon by British soldiers. Five of those civilians died. This was a major event in the steps leading up to the American Revolution.

Weekly Update 02/26/10
~ Friday February 26, 2010

Weekly Update every Friday, so come back regularly to see what’s new!

I don't know what it says about the world we're living in but today is the anniversary of a horrific event that pales in comparison to events that came later. On this day back in 1993, the World Trade Center was bombed. 1042 people were injured while only 6 people died in the blast. I think it's all too easy nowadays to overlook and forget about the tragic loss suffered in that attack, given that less than nine years later we'd multiply those figures by 6 for the injuries and by nearly 500 for the deaths. To find another disaster that scales up at that rate, WWI left over 16 million dead. It was the War To End All Wars... and 30 years later WWII sent over 73 million to their graves. <sigh> This game of one-upmanship has got to stop...

Weeky Update 02/19/10
~ Friday February 19, 2010

Happy Birthday William Robinson Jr. or as you're better known, Smoky Robinson. As the King of Motown, you helped create and mold an entire genre of musicians and their sound. Good for dancing and romancing, to be sung along with or almost un-noticed as background music, I wouldn't doubt it was one of your songs that my parents danced to when they went on their first dates together... and listened to on their first nights together... So let me say Thank You for your musical efforts. Without your hard work, it's entirely conceivable that I may not be here today

Weekly Update 02/12/10
~ Friday February 12, 2010

Rest in Peace Lady Jane Grey. Forced by your domineering mother at the age of 15 to marry a virtual stranger, a boy not much older than yourself, a mere 6 weeks before you were then required to take the throne due to the religious and political machinations of others, you were crowned Queen of England for all of 9 days. Then you were stripped of the throne, kept prisoner for a year, and finally executed... at the tender age of 16 or 17. You had a short tragic life with little opportunity to know love. With your humanist philosophies, I'd like to think you'd approve of the idea behind Valentine's Day, the one day dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating romantic love and affection.

Weekly Update 02/05/10
~ Friday February 5, 2010

Happy Birthday New Amsterdam! You first became a city on this day back in 1653 only to be renamed 12 years later as the Big Apple,.. I mean, as New York City. Purchased from the local Indians (or Native Americans as they're now called) for the bargain price of 60 guilders worth of trinkets (That's about $1000 in today's prices) that was just for the land. There were no roads, no pizza shops, no stock exchange, and no Times Square. It's just like playing Monopoly. Buy it cheap and once you've built a hotel on Park Place, the value skyrockets

Weekly Update 01/29/10
~ Friday January 29, 2010

Happy Birthday William Claude Dukenfield, aka W. C. Fields. A teetotaler in youth, you eventually developed a fondness for alcohol that became as much a part of your persona as your unique sense of humor. Quoted as saying "I can't stand water because of the things fish do in it.", you held onto your quirky ways even through your last days sick in a hospital where you were observed reading the bible and gave the following reply when asked about it, "I'm checking for loopholes." I'd bet that if anyone could, you'd find them.

Weekly Update 01/22/10

Today is the anniversary of a pivotal event, the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe Vs Wade. Despite their ruling decision, the war over the Right to Life vs the Right to Choose didn't end there. Continuing to this day, this battle pushes the buttons of all the dangerous topics, Religion, Politics, and Sex.

Weekly Update 01/15/10
~ Friday January 15, 2010

"As slow as molasses in January." You're familiar with that expression, right? What I want to know is who in their right mind considers 35 MPH slow?!? That's the speed of the 10' high wave of molasses that spilled from a burst storage tank during the Great Molasses Flood of Boston on this day back in 1919. It killed 21 people and several horses, injured 150 more, destroyed several nearby buildings, and was even powerful enough to lift a train off it's tracks! Think about that the next time someone uses that expression.
