Today is the anniversary of a pivotal event, the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe Vs Wade. Despite their ruling decision, the war over the Right to Life vs the Right to Choose didn't end there. Continuing to this day, this battle pushes the buttons of all the dangerous topics, Sex, Politics, and Religion. Everyone thinks their side is the correct one and they're each fighting to protect basic fundamental rights... with there being no clear-cut unequivocal way to know who's right. It's not like the question of if the world is flat or not, because once you've sailed around the world, you've got your answer. Nor is it simply about inconsequential opinions like the debate of Coke vs Pepsi which nobody really cares about (except perhaps a few high priced executives at each company). The appropriateness of abortion is a valid concern because lives hang in the balance... on both sides of the issue. So I completely understand the passion that both sides express when arguing their side. I may have my own very strong opinion on the matter, but I'll never claim the other side is entirely in the wrong.
I'm happy to report that my request last week for a new review for our Review Our Toys & Win! contest was answered. We've gotten one more review of a toy. Here's an exercise for any couple who is as brave and courageous as they are caring and committed to each other. Take an issue that you're on opposite sides of, that you disagree on, perhaps even that you've been fighting about... and swap sides. That's right. Spend time arguing for the side you disagree with and have your partner do the same. Seriously look at things from the other point of view for a while. What do they really believe in and why? How do their facts and their logic combine to form a solid, rational argument in their favor? Now try to convince your partner of that while your partner is arguing your original side. You may not change each others mind, but I bet a lot of middle ground opens up that you couldn't see before. Don't forget that the best part of any good argument with your lover is the make-up sex afterward!
