Weekly Update 02/05/10

Friday February 5, 2010

In the Weekly Update, John (the manager of MAXX Adult Emporium), will try to educate and entertain as well as inform you of the changes we’ve made to the website and announcements related to our stores. This is where you can easily learn about new toys we’ve added, new articles, stories, and blogs that have been written, things happening in the brick & mortar stores, and anything else I think you’ll be interested in knowing about. I’ll strive to post a Weekly Update every Friday, so come back regularly to see what’s new!

Happy Birthday New Amsterdam! You first became a city on this day back in 1653 only to be renamed 12 years later as the Big Apple,.. I mean, as New York City. Purchased from the local Indians (or Native Americans as they're now called) for the bargain price of 60 guilders worth of trinkets (That's about $1000 in today's prices) that was just for the land. There were no roads, no pizza shops, no stock exchange, and no Times Square. It's just like playing Monopoly. Buy it cheap and once you've built a hotel on Park Place, the value skyrockets.

The other buildings that didn't exist back then were peep shows and porn stores. Given the way things are going, it won't be long until they don't exist any more in NY either. In the last two decades, there's been a very strong anti-crime push going on in the city that's paid off handsomely. Crime is at an all time low, and I mean that literally - it's lower than it's ever been since they've been keeping track of these things! But in their push to 'clean up neighborhoods' they've made it nearly impossible for adult establishments of any kind to survive and many of them have been forced to close their doors for good. Personally I'm torn over if this is a good or bad thing. On the one hand many of those establishments turned a blind eye to anything that happened on their premises, resulting in as much drug dealing as smut peddling. But on the other hand they fulfilled a need for sexually explicit products for their customers. Here's hoping that clean, upscale stores can move in and fill that niche. At least one good thing appeared in NY in the last few years... the Museum of Sex

Our Review Our Toys! contest is over and Jamie won! Thank you for your reviews of the Pleasure Kiss, Tawney's Yellow G-Spot, & Jill Kelly's Jel-Lee Strap-On w/ Harness. Writing three reviews and thus getting three chances to win (more than anyone else) paid off when I pulled your name out of the cup and you can expect an e-mail with a coupon code for your 30% discount shortly. This contest went over well, with us getting 13 reviews on 12 different toys in only twelve weeks. That's more than we'd gotten in the 18 months previously. We'll hopefully have another contest of some sort before the year is over, so keep checking these updates to stay informed of what's happening.

It's the last week before Valentine's Day. Make your plans now so that you're not stuck paying $50 or more for a dozen roses at the last moment and trying to pass it off as a romantic idea. Everyone gives roses for Valentine's Day, that's why florists double their usual prices this week. Why not use that money for something that will be around (and be appreciated) for more than a week or two? We've got lots of items in our New Arrivals section and of course there's the entire Shop with over 1300 toys for you to pick from. We've even got a Toy Guide to help you find the perfect toy.

What if you're not much into 'that type' of toy? Or perhaps you're partner isn't interested in hardcore adult toys? We've got lots of other options for you to select from. Check out the Bath, Body & Massage section for such things as playful bubble bath or sensual massage oil. Or look through the Books, Games, & Party Supplies section for daring and tasty games or fun coupons. Or (and this is my favorite section) check out the Erotica and Instructional books. I always recommend books to anyone not sure what their partner wants because when you give a book to your sweetheart, you can offer to read it to them, one chapter a night for as long as the book lasts. They'll get not only the fun of the story, but also the pleasure of your company & satisfaction of your undivided attention plus the comfort of snuggling with you while you read.

Please don't think I'm anti-flowers just because I spoke out against them for Valentine's Day. I'm against paying ridiculous sums of money just because everyone else is doing the same thing at the same time. My suggestion of the week for the guys (or flower-buying partner) is to make a note in your day-timer (or whatever schedule reminder you use) to buy flowers for no particular reason some time later this year. Not for a birthday, anniversary, or other scheduled holiday. Just pick a day at random right now, and set a reminder for yourself to buy flowers that day. My suggestion for the ladies (or flower-receiving partner) is that when you get surprised by flowers for no particular reason later in the year, remember that it's because they really care about you and were thinking about you... and not because I just told them to do it. Really.

John
