Use the right kind of candle.

Don’t just grab a tea light and think you’re ready for date night.  There are different kinds of candle wax, and not all are safe to pour on skin. Massage candles are made from soy wax, which has a lower melting point than other kinds of wax. Wax used in taper and pillar candles melts at a much higher temperature and will burn skin.

How can you tell what kind of wax a candle is made out of? Basically, if a candle is not sold in a jar or other container, DO NOT USE THEM ON SKIN. If you are not sure what kind of wax a candle is made from, DO NOT USE IT ON SKIN. It may result in second-degree burns and a trip to the urgent care.

Fortunately, there are a plethora of massage candles safe to use for sexy purposes and will melt at just the right temperature. They also smell divine and leave the skin soft. They melt down into oil instead of wax, which means you don’t have to clean wax off your skin when you’re done.

Burn the candle for 30 minutes before pouring. 

Massage candles turn to oil as they melt, so they have to burn for a while to pool enough oil to use for massage. Pour the candle too soon, and wax will build up on one side of the candle and leave it harder to burn in the future. Give it about a 30-minute burn to let the candle melt evently all the way to the edge of the container. This gives you enough wax to play with tonight, and keeps the wax from building up unevenly on one side to make future burns as smooth as the first.

Blow the flame out before using the wax.

We get this question a lot: “Do I blow the candle out before I pour the wax?”

Answer: “Yes!”

Unlike other kinds of wax, soy wax is slow to harden after melting, so you have loads of time to use it before it cools. Blow out the flame, and go to town!

There are perfect places to pour.

The neck and shoulders are ideal for pouring massage candle wax. This moisturizing wax is also great for foot massage and provides relief for dry, chapped feet. The feet are a great starting point for massage, leading up to thighs, the backs of the knees, and other fun erogenous zones.

However, wax is not the same as lube and should not be used that way. Do not put the wax inside the body, either vaginally or anally. At best it’s irritating and at worst it can cause a yeast infection.

Cleanup is a breeze.

Massage candle wax leave an oil on the skin that’s skin-safe and a great moisturizer, and should absorb into the skin so showering may not be necessary. If you feel too oily after, a little soap and water should get it right off.
